Blue of All Trades

In honor of tonight's performance, I thought I would amuse you all with a list of jobs I've held (in no particular order; they'll come out in the order I can remember them):

Piano teacher
Organist
Choral accompanist
Music transcriber
Lounge pianist
Dinner theatre performer
Pit orchestra pianist
Sound board operator
Camp counselor
Camp teacher
Camp director
Housesitter
Dogsitter
Babysitter
Waitress
Cafeteria server/dishwasher
Data entry clerk
"Booth Babe" at a technology trade show
Mailroom assistant
Receptionist
Retail worker
Customer Service Representative
Van Driver
Telemarketer
And... graduate student.

Dare you to add your own list! Tag-you're-it-one-two-three-go!

Extensive list! What have you learned from all these occupations? :)

Boy! That as even more of an extensive list than Steinbeck's. Did you change jobs every few weeks or so, Blue? Also do you still do "booth babe"? ;)

A lot of the jobs on this list took place at the same time. For example, while I was teaching piano lessons I was also working as an organist and a choral accompanist. The other reason there are so many jobs is because when I would do things like camp work in the summers, there would still be a month or so when I was neither at camp nor at college -- so that's when I would housesit, babysit, etc.

I only did the booth babe thing once, when I was working for a temp agency (which is where I got "receptionist," "mailroom asst," and "data entry clerk"). It was a great job. I got to call out "Hello, gentlemen, is your company looking for a hard drive duplicator?" and then deal with guys who tried to give me their phone number.

What did I learn, Vi? Probably that Marx was right. Jobs where one has control over one's product and where the product can grow and build over time (as opposed to "mailroom asst," which was a never-ending stack of envelopes) are a lot more interesting.

I wish I could say I had a more interesting list of occupations but I tended to go into jobs that I thought would be my career at the time.

- Lawyers assistant (when i was thinking about law school)
-medical lab assistant (when i was thinking about med school)
-engineer (when i completed engineering school)
- hopefully stock broker (finally finished grad school)

I think this list will probably recycle at some point. =)

>>First! Yay! Hi! How are you? I miss chatting w/ you on a regular basis like we used to do in [unnamed] college! You've let your hair grow! It looks nice! :)

>>Second! When are you coming to visit me in Manhattan? I know you're poor...I know! But...PLEASE??? :)

>>Third! My job listing has been rather sad compared to yours:
babysitter, chemistry tutor, calculus 2 paper grader, and, of course, graduate student.

>>Fourth! Do you know the show "Little Britain"? You MUST rent it from the library or download youtube clips. It is joy.

>>Fifth! I do hope all is well for you. You seem to be doing okay for yourself.

>>Sixth! There is no sixth!

>>Seventh! Harry Potter #7 on July 21!!! OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!

>>Eighth! Isn't that a weirdly spelled word? eigHTH?

>>Ninth! What are you doing in India besides living? And, why are you making all this Indian food now? Why not cherish the apple pie and veggie burgers while you can?

>>Tenth! I wish I had Susan's contact info for you...She'd LOVE to hear all about this.

K... That's all for now. I'll keep reading and post when I can! :)

Sred -- I guess the difference between you and me is that my "career" demands that I have different "jobs." ^__^ It's a shame.

Daniel -- so good to hear from you! Let's see if I can keep track...

One: I miss you too, and thanks on the hair thing. It was really inspired by the fact that I don't want to shell out the $$$ to keep it short.

Two: When are YOU coming to visit ME????

Three: Give it time. Someday you may be an adjunct, after all, and then you'll be able to add things like "waiter" and "telemarketer" to your list as well!

Four: No, sorry. Will have to look it up.

Fifth: Yeah, I'm pretty happy right now.

Sixth: Um... 'kay!

Seventh: OMGOMGOMG! I have a picture from Equus that you might like to see...

Eighth: I'll just let you think about that one.

Ninth: Watch for the post. It'll come soon.

Tenth: So do I. Has she disappeared from the face of the earth? She's nowhere to be found on the internet...

Hearts and love. P.S. I told you wrong and Sondheim is on the Simpsons tomorrow night, 3-4-07.
